Sight Name:Tibet Museum (Xizang Bowuguan)
Tibet Museum (Xizang Bowuguan)
It's worth a visit for its extensive displays of thangkas (Tibetan scrolls), instruments, and gold copper statues of Buddhas. The museum also houses the gold seal of the vaunted 5th Dalai Lama, who is credited with unifying Tibet in the 17th century (though this isn't mentioned in the museum). A spiffy audio tour is included in the price of admission. The third floor isn't worth visiting, unless you like stuffed animal dioramas. Be sure to pick up the free pamphlet issued by the Information Office of the State Council, which recalls "the four glorious decades of regional ethnic autonomy in Tibet."
