Jiayuguan, located in northwestern part of Gansu Province, was a pass of strategic importance in the Ancient Silk Road, and has been a center of cultural exchange between the East and the West since ancient times. Jiayuguan sits on the north foot of Mount Qilian with Mount Qilian on its south and Black Mountain on its south. Jiayuguan is the representative of the part of Great Wall in western China, and also the west starting point of the Ming Walls. In the fifth year of the reign of Emperor Hongwu (A.D. 1372), Grand General Fang Sheng who was granted the power to conquer the west chose the seat of Jiayuguan, and began to build this pass. The pass city is composed of outer city, inner city, citadels outside the city gates to reinforce the defense, additional walls outside the city wall for defense purposes, city moat, and the Great Wall on both south and north side of the city, enjoying reputable names as "the most important pass in the world" and "this most strategically significant pass in Hexi". Jiayuguan is also the magnificent carrier of the heritage handed down for studying of the history, geography, military, politics, economics, people, literature, and art of the western part of China as well as carrying forward the Great Wall spirit.
